Everything looks pretty good, normally enhancements are single tiered but with this being a kekkei genkai I’m okay with the enhancements getting an improvement as long as it’s only one improvement per category in the higher ranks.
Just to keep things standardized I’d like to have you set it up as a heritage slot instead of a dormant slot, that just makes it a little easier for us to keep track of the number of proficiency slots each character has total. risingspirit.boards.net/thread/84/dodomeki-clan?page=1&scrollTo=173 has an example. I’m okay with the name being customized to fit the lore of the kkg thought.
This is a very good quality application. Everything seems pretty reasonable here. Just keep her doton usage a bit limited in terms of how often she can use it with her best applications. I'm fine with the doggo having a tanto as long as it doesn't turn into it being used to deliver elemental techniques.
Basic use of Flash tags would be allowed, but yet complex applications would be a Bukijutsu skill, yes?
Use of flash tags and explosive tags are considered part of the shurikenjutsu proficiency. Anything beyond basic usage should be declared in that proficiency.
Hey! I have a few questions pertaining to my character. Namely, how would one go about making a kekkei genkai if they're clanless?
And how do rank claims work for those not associated with a particular village?
Hi there, for your first question what you'll want to do is establish the existance of the kekkei genkai in some way. I did this with my own custom clan by making a group of people that have been scattered and it is rare to find actual people from the clan (more just descendants).
We may be able to work with it being not from a clan, but it'd still have to be available for other people to use if desired. If that is the case you'd want to go with still apping it in the clan area and just use the opening part about clan info to explain some of the history behind the keikkei genkai.
For the second question non shinobi do not have rank claims, you can either make a missing ninja up to chunin equivlant or a non-shinobi.
Non-Shinobi Option 1. Begin with one apprentice proficiency and two rookie. Option 2. Begin with one journeyman level proficiency.
For KKG characters that means you'll probably start with a KKG and another ability with one at rookie and one at apprentice (with the third being used up by heritage).
This guide is intended as a quick calibration for former members of the site Rising Spirit was inspired by. If you didn't come from it this may not make sense to you and I'd reccomend sticking with the official guide and the threads linked inside it.
Abilities- our version is called proficiencies. We have six tiers, which I believe is a couple less than TWF but around the same idea. This page will go over the tiering.
Taijutsu & Shurikenjutsu- Rather than abstracted they are something that occupies a slot and makes up basic character composition on everyone but civillian characters. Taijutsu is also a measure of physical fitness (although bukijutsu also help to a minor degree).
Changes to Bukijutsu, Puppetry, Inuzuka, ETC- Weapons, puppets, and doggos are now baked into the parent ability. You can get more powerful and/or more numerous tools as part of the skill rank. It is worth noting that at around a journeyman level or so in buki or puppetry you can incorporate other proficiencies you know into your attacks in a basic way (like making a sword burning if you have katon or using poisons in your puppets with a medical proficiency).
Changes to Advanced Release- Advanced releases take a little more investment, needing the second rank in each proficiency as opposed to the first. This is offset by it unlocking at a journeyman level.
Nintaijutsu- This also unlocks at a journeyman level once you have the prerequistie skills and invest time into learning it.
Byakugan- It unlocks and doesn't require development after that. Their hijutsu is a leveled proficiency.
Water walking and surface walking- Now restricted to suiton and doton respectivly to create bigger differences in utility.
Onomichi is a small town on the borderlands of the territories of the Sound Village. For many years it has been the target of raids from the Taiyou Empire, a nation built from the ashes of the Land of Fire that commands influence over the living dead. The latest assault threatens to be the end of the city, with swarms of Imperial Ashigaru laying siege. While no individual footmen is particularly strong, they have come in droves and Onomichi's buildings are lit with flame. Rapid response forces race to respond to the menace as the sun sets.
The Hidden Sound is not alone. An auxilary force formed of hired shinobi and mercenaries from other lands are at their disposal. The Sound Village keeps the Empire busy, so each nation seems to be vested in aiding it in protecting its territories. But there is a deeper plot at play here: each village knows that the neutral Sound village could decide the outcome of future conflicts based on who holds their favor. Rival villages find themselves working together to fufill the mission of their common employer, at least outwardly.
Details Event Start: Early October Participants: RSVP required. Pace: Varies. I will wait up to one week. May go early if all replies are in.
The event will be seperated into Four Zones.
Zone 0: The forward operating base of the coalition. This zone will be a subboard, which people will be allowed to make any number of threads in. This area will be open to any who wish to post in it to have their character filling some sort of support role in the event but don't really want to participate in combat. This will be open without RSVP. It will also serve as a "wait list" area for those that didn't RSVP should reinforcements be needed. There won't be moderated posts in this area.
Zone 1: The fields between the forward operating base and Onomichi. This is where some members will begin and have to battle through imperial defenses to get to the town.
Zone 2: The outer perimeter of the town. This is where imperial forces are most concentrated.
Zone 3: This is the heart of the town, where those shinobi who were sent to garrison it will be defending against imperial forces.
Expectations: NPC sealing specialists will be present and require protecting. Ashigaru are basic swordsman with around a rookie-apprentice ability in using some form(s) of bukijutsu. The Ashigaru are only animated by doton and don't have regenerative abilities. They are very old and decrepit units that a genin could take out, their numbers is what makes them dangerous. There may be up to two-three enemies in the event that will pose a challenge to higher ranking characters. You are authorized to bring in Ashigaru for your character to fight and defeat throughout the exercise (only the ones made by staff will be moderated).
Failing to post within a week (outside zone 0) means that you will be skipped. If your character was under threat of being damaged that can mean they will recieve damage.
Combat between players is a part of roleplaying that can be both extremely satisfying or extremely unsatisfying. True freedom to engage in conflict between characters that is not pre-plotted is something that is growing rarer and rarer these days. It isn’t the preference of a lot of roleplayers (and that’s okay). Rising Spirit, however, is a site that establishes an open environment for conflict between characters when they are outside of their villages.
A big part of why player verse player is often hailed as a toxic environment is because of the emotional attachments and bias we tend to form for our own characters. We generally want our own characters to succeed. These emotions are perfectly normal, because the characters we make are often a part of us whether we realize it or not. The emotional part of our brains have a hard time distinguishing fiction from reality. When a character dies it is possible to feel real grief.
So why engage with this content when your emotions are at stake? It is for the same reason that your favorite show leaves you on a cliff hanger at the end of an episode. High stakes riles us up and keeps us coming back. It avoids the feeling of stagnation so prevelant in more popular formats like slice of life.
To prevent toxicity from taking hold in us, we have to recognize and accept that we will have emotions and bias. Its okay that we do so long as we understand going in that we are going to have them and make efforts not to act on impulse. We also have to be able to forgive people when they slip up. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve had times in my many years of playing in shonen roleplays that I have not handled every situation perfectly.
-Wait a few hours and reread a post a second time before responding if your initial response to it gave you a negative feeling. This gives you time to make sure that initial emotions aren't having an influence on your decision to dispute things or not. Avoid asking others for opinions during this time and give yourself time to process the information.
-Communicate with your opponent about what your character is good at and what they are good at. Try not to no-sell the other character's strengths. I'm not saying to predetermine anything but the thread is going to be more satisfying to you, your partner(s), and people reading the thread if there is some back and fourth in the thread. One of the things we look for when we are determining how highly weighted threads like these are for upgrades is how memorable it is. Would anyone be excited to read it in a manga or an anime?
-Limit your character's actions during each post of combat. One to two things is best. Don't forget about hand seals for ninjutsu which is going to be a lot slower than throwing a punch.
-Keep out of the peanut gallery on disputes and keep them private. If you and your partner(s) can't resolve it you should go to the staff with it. People tend to feel awkward about being put on the spot and may just echo back what they think you want to hear, and worse it can aggitate the person whose actions you are disputing. Our staff team will help settle it. However, please do try to work things out first, because if you can't that is generally a bad sign that the thread is going to have OOC drama attached to it.
-Grow from the loss. Not every battle is going to result in a character death. Exploring loss and pushing your character to get better is hallmark shonen and we love to see it. Nothing like a good vengance plot either. If you left room in your backstory for a sibling or something you could even potentially make them and transfer progress, and then you have an established villain that grew from organic play.
-Be a good winner too. Don't do a bunch of gloating OOC and practice humility. Consider alternatives to killing characters when it makes sense.

Few pure Dodomeki still exist, instead their legacy primarily lives on through recessive genes of their descendants. A nomadic group with dwindling numbers, Dodomeki are most often found in the Lands of Lightning, Fire, and Stone. Those who maintain the ways of the clan practice the merchant trade, but are frowned upon as criminals often use them to fence stolen goods. This has led to ideas about the clan being a band of roaming thieves, a reputation that has led to its decline. While their have been a good number of tricksters that have been born of the clan, there is also a history of training in medical ninjutsu that is often passed on to its people.
Those possessing the Dodomeki kekkei genkai have many eyes that litte their body. Although they can not see chakra or more accuratly, it does grant them a wide field of vision and a few other boons. The clan itself sees their genetic gift as a curse, the growing process leading up to their maturity is painful as the body becomes enveloped in tumors. Sometimes the kekkei genkai will fail to mature at all, leading to a slow and painful death. The clan officially honors those who survive to unlock the tokakugan, but there have been cases where grief over lost family has led to misplaced envy within the ranks of the clan.
Kekkei Genkai
Dodomeki Heritage Those who are born with the clans kekkei genkai will begin to grow large tumors all over their body, which is often mistaken for a terminal illness to those unware of their heritage. This typically begins at puberty and can last for years or sometimes not even advance at all, leading to death.
Tokakugan [Many Eyes] Requirements: Dodomeki Heritage Upon maturity of this kekkei genkai the tumors slowly begin to open up to reveal eyes beneath the skin. These eyes allow the Dodomeki to see in nearly all directions provided enough skin is uncovered. In addition to this, the Dodomeki is able to turn their eyes inward upon themselves, allowing them to easily identify internal injuries and to be more precise in self treatment. Finally, these eyes can be used as mediums for performing visual genjutsu without hand seals.
The drawback of having eyes all over the body is that those possessing this trait are more vulnerable to dust and debris. Taking wounds overall is somewhat more painful because of the plethora of vulnerable points around the body.
The ability to absorb chakra is confined to physical touch between the user and their target. Requiring the use of chakra itself, lower ranks in this ability are mild and while draining don't retain enough chakra to completely pay for the use of draining jutsu. It also generally requires longer periods of contact to drain a signficant amount of chakra, making taijutsu a vital supplement to this skill.
Improving this proficiency typically increases the amount of chakra that can be drained, the speed it can be drained, and the efficiency of absorbing the chakra that is being drained.
