The mark of the oni curses a child. At least, that is what legend and myth say. The exact circumstances of the creation of an oni are unclear; whether through experimentation and cruel practices or through demon worship and the accumulation of evil karma, the only consistent theme is the vileness of the forefathers of the supposed oni... along with the consequences their actions might bring. Some oni look relatively normal while others appear large and vicious, sporting unnatural skin colour. The one trait that is apparent in all oni, however, are their horns, the most reliable sign you're dealing with one.
Oni Heritage
Those born with the oni's curse sport small bumps on their forehead, typically accompanied by unnaturally high strength at an early age and a penchant for meat over anything else. Not every oni unlocks the capabilities of their physiology, certain emotional motivations and stressors as well as physical training needed for the oni's unique chakra signature to be released, fundamentally altering their physiology.
Oni no Chi (Blood of the Oni)
Requirements: Oni Heritage
Starting at rookie proficiency, the oni's altered physiology experiences drastic change as it is subjected to training and stress, special enzymes are released to dramatically increase the strength and density of their musculature, and their chakra signature becomes altered from that of a normal human's. This dense musculature dramatically improves strength and increases weight, but the replacement of fat with muscle sacrifices one's ability to swim, requiring a concerted effort just to stay afloat in calm waters. (Note: this ability functions as a strength booster and does not stack with Strength Enhancement.)
Reaching apprentice rank further increases one's strength. The incredibly dense muscle also affords the oni increased durability as blows struggle to affect them, and bone similarly follows suit, gaining incredible resistance and density as the oni's altered chakra suffuses their body, able to fall from greater heights, resist greater tension, and more easily recover from fractures. The oni's weight also significantly increases, though this only worsens their swimming abilities. (Note: similar to the strength increase, this does not stack with Enhanced Durability.)
Alternatively, an oni can instead enhance their chakra signature. The immense pressure and intense killing intent from their signature is enough to make concentrating on things like genjutsu more difficult, and apart from being an excellent way to induce fear, they also gain the ability to cast Auditory Genjutsu through this aura. Use of this aura, however, makes one stand out to a ninja with even the most rudimentary sensory abilities, and even those without any such skills will notice this aura within the general area. (Note: genjutsu proficiency must still be acquired separately.)
At journeyman rank, the oni gains whatever they didn't pick in the previous tier, as well as further enhancing their physical abilities. Additionally, a sudden enhancement to their metabolism gives them resistance to foreign agents like disease and poison. Weight increases after this tier also slow down significantly.
Coming into veteran rank and beyond, no new abilities are unlocked, simply enhancing the abilities previously listed.
