Medical Ninjutsu [Apprentice] Despite his seemingly permanent aversiveness to anything related to his patriarch, Chinetsu nonetheless found himself walking down the path of an accomplished physician on the field. Some say this choice was seen as an attempt for the Chuunin to somehow prove his father wrong regarding his final choice – though no one that understood his plights was left to offer such validation. In the end, after being dismayed over the self-perceived notion that his efforts were truly in vain, Chinetsu’s besotted condition would erode most of his medical skills, and thus rendered them unexceptional, at best.
Yet despite his arguably well-deserved distain, he nonetheless still retained his ability for saving life, and often was known for his unorthodox techniques to save that very life, especially in combat. Much like his father, he quickly developed a sense for being able to provide basic healing services on the scene when materials were not readily available, including knowledge of his surroundings in order to use nature in his favor.
When it comes to combat, a combination of his chakra and physical excision is his endgame. While he has not quite understood the odd marriage, he nonetheless applies himself at it so as to come closer and closer to being better at it.
Medical Ninjutsu [Journeyman] Despite his seemingly permanent aversion to anything related to his patriarch, Chinetsu nonetheless found himself walking down the path of an accomplished physician on the field. Some say this choice was seen as an attempt for the Chuunin to somehow prove his father wrong regarding his final choice in profession, yet unfortunately for him, by the time his skills came into fruition, no one that understood his plight remained alive to offer the validation he so desperately sough. As such, in the end, after being dismayed over the self-perceived notion that his efforts were truly in vain, Chinetsu’s besotted condition would erode most of his medical skills, and thus rendered them unexceptional, at best.
Yet despite his arguably well-deserved disdain, he nonetheless still retained his ability to save a life, often known for his unorthodox techniques, especially in combat. Much like his father, he quickly developed a sense for being able to provide basic healing services on the scene when materials were not readily available, including knowledge of his surroundings in order to use nature in his favor. And this improved over time once he returned to service, where years spent on the practice of his craft, both mentally and physically, allowed the rather easy and smooth return of skills – skills he had previously abandoned.
Upon his conscription back into Kumo military as a field battle medic, his return to the field was marked with a most dangerous assignment, one involving the coordinated, multi-village effort to provide assistance to the Hidden Sound against aggressive foreign invaders. It was during his sobriety prior to the big event, as well as the re-training, and myriad of missions that were designed to prepare him for such large scale conflicts, that he saw a sudden sharp improvement in his medical skills. Prior to his return, he’d mostly employ life saving techniques merely to prevent his liver from being overworked due to the all alcohol, and his heart from failing due to the lack of proper nutrition. Now that he was back on the field, his techniques gained a bit more acuity.
Signature techniques such as the Chakra no Mesu, the scalpel that changed the way medics applied aid, returned as one of his staples. Hand-in-hand with such knowledge to heal came the discovery of skills like Renshin, which, using the same concept of execution as the chakra scalpel, create senbon of one’s own energy for offensive, short-range purposes. Finally, while his abilities still cannot fully grasp Shoshen, a more amateurish version of his Healing Technique allows him to keep his allies from suffering harm.
[attr="class","zacwords"]On any other occasion, the passing of such natural beauty would be pondered, regarded, to the point he’d cease any previous engagements in order gaze in wonder. However, this was no time to admire the majestic nature of the cherry blossom tree. Even in its sad, lonely state, most of its beauty shed due to the cold, biting weather, it still silently commanded a high level of respect. He hoped that in his own old age, he too could stand tall and proud, withered yet nonetheless with an eternal sense of reverence and favorability among his kin. I must make it out of here in one piece first... Yet those hopes could easily be dashed if he suffered a premature death, especially at the hands of the warring creatures around them. No sir; that simply will not due. [break][break]
And so, as he and a select band of elite warriors left his muse behind in order to proceed onward towards the shrine ahead, his focus would realign with the task at hand. Anotsu lead the way, a bit of stealth now embraced as they shifted away from the war-torn stage that was outside, and into the more preserved, quiet, dimly lit, and well-secluded building. Once inside, a black wave engulfed his optics. Several rugs and a mess of paperwork existed before the statue of a wooden cat, its façade forever frozen in a rather curious expression. And while some semblance of fading light dared peer its way through the crystalline crisscross design of the windows, darkness was the ruler of this land for the most part. I can barely see... This would heighten the potential for peril in the eyes of the medic, and so, as they continued to slink about quietly, an extra level of awareness was put forth to prevent any potential misfortune. [break][break]
The irony in his timing was...coincidental, at best. Then again, he was never one to indulge in such pleasantries. That kind of mentality was best suited for people who understood not the perils of life and its dark truths. Chinetsu was not one of them. As such, he knew that when the deafening sound of a bell crashed through the surprising silence the shrine held – the shock being it retained its muteness despite the war outside, as well as the creature that had crashed above moments before their ingress – there was no concurrency. Something’s coming...!!! Timed perfectly with the ring of the first bell, chakra surged through his body, and while no nature had been chosen yet, he was nonetheless ready to convert the energy into the beacon of his safety at a moment’s notice. [break][break]
“Oh no!” a voice screeched as Junko bolted across the room towards the bell. A grotesque pig nosed bat the size of a small child had a hold of the rope that made the bell ring, and it quickly let go and began fluttering upwards to try to get away from her
[break]
A shrill exclamation from an unknown, foreign agent joined into the chorus, and while Chinetsu’s position meant the darkness hid the culprit’s full identity from his struggling eyes, he took some form of comfort in knowing a nearby ally – whose incursion into the building was unique and singular, but nonetheless effective – was close enough to employ some change of her own. Her entry came from the hole made above by their main target it seemed, affording her a unique angle to approach the culprit behind the bell ringing. But the medic would soon have his hands full with problems of his own. That sound...!!! As he had moved in formation with Anotsu, he stood somewhat close during his explosive discovery. Fortunately for the medic, not only had his chakra already been ready for use as a reaction to the initial ringing of the bell, but the all too familiar triggering of what appeared to be some form of an explosive note derivative would hopefully grant him a much-needed reprieve from the violence. [break][break]
“MOVE!!!” [break]
Anotsu , Kikuyu, and Chinetsu had entered and made their way up the stairs towards the sound of the chiming bell. When the fearless Jounin reached down to pick up the scroll in the dark, there was a sound of a fuse lighting and a sudden flash followed by a boom.
[break]
Whether his sudden warning would reach the ears of his ally was irrelevant, as the only priority right now was avoiding damage. With his chosen chakra path now raging with energy, Chinetsu would move with cold blooded instinct, Shunshin making him appear to seemingly disappear from their initial spot. He would not have to travel far, but nonetheless his desired destination was in the form of a retreat, away from the explosion and hopefully into safety's warm embrace. He would do this as Junko made her approach, and hopefully, while Anotsu executed his own defense. Had they suffered any injuries, Chinetsu’s raging chakra could instantly become medically inclined. Then again, before he was thinking of healing anyone, it was imperative this blast be survived. [break][break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Despite having accepted most terms under his forced conscription back into Kumo military, there were still civilian sides of him that wished for simple side of life, wanting to abscond at once at the sheer mention of responsibility. While on the heals of an all-out invasion of Oto – it was friendly, and at Oto’s request – he had to rack up a few missions. It turned out this was one of them, and it was a crowded one. I am not in the mood… The self-loathing and disdain was strong with this one, and he carried it with him all the way to their meeting point, one of the gates entering and or exiting the village. It appeared either they were extremely early, or he had been late. [break][break]
“…” [break][break]
the jonin was dressed in your typical jonin shinobi attire. his headband hung loosely around his neck, glinting in the morning light. attached to his back were two large scrolls, the outside paper in a yellow colour. the inuzuka clapped his hands together, seeming excited about this venture.
[break]
They were to meet by the village gates, the most normal and perfect meeting place for shinobi. A black silk kimono held together by a dark red silk sash as her attire, she kept her katana sheathed tightly under her sash. She had decided against wearing her signature straw hat, instead allowing her jet black hair to flow with the wind.
[break]
Whatever it was, Enma approached and bowed toward the Jonin.
[break]
Three different entities, all with three different agendas. Three different approaches. Three different pains in the ass…? And while Chinetsu wasn’t sure of that question yet, he also knew his ornary, old self – by default – owed everyone the benefit of the doubt. After all, the shit he had pulled up until his capture and “repatriation” was heinous. Simply put, he had no room to judge. And as such, as he arrived to the gates to greet his squad, taking a moment to observe each one and collect his own judgement, he would not to his team captain, a man the dossier named as “Kegawa”. Like any other, Chinetsu would join ranks, ivory robes and raven locks in tow.[break][break]
but i am curious to know what you pups would do if given this mission to lead.
It seemed like a redundant question, but Chinetsu did not want to appear to be rude. It was best to get through this as amicably, after all.[break][break]
“...complete the task by removing the exigent threat, as soon as possible.” [break][break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Connection! Just as he had arrived on the scene with haste, his lightning bases efforts channeled into the aerial projectiles, piggybacking onto Anotsu’s attack and enhancing in order to create a credible and unavoidable threat to the flying assailant. And while it appeared the ghastly, demonic looking rider atop the strange looking bird would take efforts to avoid damage as best as it could, some things seemed to already be set in stone. As such, the combination would work, lightning, chakra and metal coming together to partially turn the opponent’s weapon against them, and at the same time, potentially injuring them. But as much as he wanted to celebrated, experience urged his patience; dep down, he knew this encounter was far from over. [break][break]
The bat barreled towards a shrine, not far from Kikuyō’s position.
[break][break]
A furrowed brow worn as what now appeared to be a large bat circled its way into a spectacular crash somewhere nearby. The building appeared to be untouched from the initial fires, a temple of sorts. A bat…!? To make matters worse, while Chinetsu had barely begun to grasp the potential bestial nature of his opponents, it seemed the suspected oversized bat, the one carrying their main target, the one they had downed, had now crashed into a building and seemingly burst, reproducing into hundreds of miniature versions of itself. [break][break]
There was a stillness from the shrine for several moments, but then from the hole in the roof came what looked like a flock of birds.
[break][break]
They did not hesitate to attack either. Those of Chinetsu’s allies unfortunate to be so close to the crash point had been subject to the seemingly vampirical bats, and without warning, were quickly overcome. And so was the Cloud medic, overcome with regret as he witnessed positive turn to negative as if it were a turnkey. Yet despite this, the seasoned combat medic knew better than to lead the way through outbursts. At the moment he had regrouped with Anotsu. Breaking that formation purely on the vanity of shallow revenge would expose him to more vulnerability than he cared to witness.[break][break]
"Chinetsu," I began with a nod of respect, "Your timing is impeccable.
[break][break]
And though he felt a tad bit more enraged than a rationale mind desired midst such a tactical incursion, at the very least, he was there; present. Together, they stood a better chance. And so, despite some minor victories appearing to end in losses, the bigger picture was at hand. Keeping the same plan in play, Chinetsu would let his chakra rage as he continued to charge his compatriot’s projectile attacks with his own lightning, applying the same effect that brought the singular threat down, but in a wider fashion to suit the sudden invasion of smaller yet equally annoying winged opponents. Simply put, it was effortless. [break][break]
Kikuyo, Hideyoshi, Izumi, Chinetsu and others in the area had a chance to follow Anotsu through to the building and the well outside of it if they moved quickly before the bats moved back into the circle and to harass them again.
[break][break]
It was time to move in. With the break in bats as a result of their strike, Chinetsu would mirror Anotsu and what would appear like a few other allies. The temporary opening granted them a chance to move forward – best not to waste it![break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Time’s passing had granted him a reprieve from the cycle of violence and substance abuse he had engaged in for far too long, and with the abandoned building in which he healed himself acting as a rather reliable asylum, he had time to think hard. Time to think about what he wanted with his life. This is getting old... While he had spent years wallowing in his own sorrow, chasing familiar ghosts and continuously burying his most painful memories through inebriation, he realized the only direction such a lifestyle had in store for him was the very location where all his loved ones had ultimately wound up. [break][break]
“Dead.” [break][break]
As he spoke for the first time in a while, his own voice seemed foreign to him, and thus his own words appeared to be spoken by somebody else. A higher power? No...that was a silly notion. But the simple idea that he had still some potential for a higher calling was enough to power his indecision regarding his current lifestyle even further. I’m sick of this life... And so, as the last bits of chakra powered his hands, making his appendages glow a blueish-purple color as the last of his toxins were removed, he found newfound strength not just through regained health, but also through mental resolve. He would make a point to stop feeling sorry for himself, and instead to move with the final half of his life. Simply put, he was too old to keep passing out and waking up in his own vomit.[break][break]
“...” [break][break]
Once the coast was clear, he’d cease his healing jutsu, rising instead and nearing a small removable piece of paneling that covered a hole in the abandoned building. While most of the panels were firmly secure, one in particular, three feet high and wide, was adjustable enough that he could slip through. The once bright alleyway before him had now become much darker, shadows cast as the last bits of daylight washed over this particularly seedy portion of Kumo. Soon, night would strike, and this particular portion of “the streets” would belong to the lawless. Whether that was good or not was yet to be determined. Given Chinetsu’s lifestyle, he stood in equal favor with his debt collectors as he did with the nightly denizens – there was none. Kill on sight, or so it felt like. As such, the medic would be as careful to move about as he was when he was being chased.[break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]All it took was a mere proposal of tactical union for the Jounin to proceed forward with thundering force, a once still, calm yet nonetheless menacing presence now under a berserk spell that propelled him forward at speeds Chinetsu had rarely seen. Fast...!!! While he was unsure whether or not he could keep up, the Chuunin would nonetheless attempt to follow suit, and although his appearance was that of a hardened yet weathered veteran, he felt he could still perform at a competent and comparable level to that of his newfound comrade. And so off he went, eager and determined to prove this notion to be true. Although chakra would power his initial departure, once a steady momentum was achieved, pure physical skill would take over. The day was long; it was wise to conserve as much chakra as possible. [break][break]
The winds, crashing through his sides and forcing his arms to outstretch backwards while fluttering behind him in an effort to maintain maximum aerodynamics, would make understanding Anotsu a bit more difficult, though not impossible. It didn't help he maintained a careful tone. Then again, they were after all in potentially hostile territory. It was imperative they maintain maximum situational awareness, not just for their sake, but also for that of the larger task at hand – to maintain peace and enforce Oto’s allies from an invading force. Regardless of them both hailing from different hidden villages, they would be deemed equal opportunity victims in the hands of their would-be assailants, should they drop their guard enough to allow such a tragedy to occur. To the Taiyou, it mattered not where you hailed from; only what you had that they could take. [break][break]
“Agreed. As talented as we are, we are still but two...” [break][break]
“...in this case, it would seem discretion is indeed the better part of valor...” [break][break]
Choice words spoken midst powerful strides in order to answer the Ame-nin's inquiry. As they progressed through the countryside, a sense of confidence and pride surrounded Chinetsu. He was in good company, that much he knew. Anotsu shared a sound tactical mind, evident by his proposal to selectively intervene in conflict should it be found, among other things, since their presence was mainly for the sake of gathering intelligence until they were officially called into action by Oto. And so, while they contemplated potentially facing an unknown, large-scale enemy, doing so tactically and with shared offensive precision was the surefire answer for whatever riddle they would soon face. Or was it...? They got wiped out...!!! [break][break]
They stopped as quickly as they began their movement once the spent battlegrounds had been spotted, the duo relocating to a higher, hidden perch, one that would allow a discrete but complete view to be cast over the newly found disaster of a battlefield ahead. Dead and alive coexisted across hallowed grounds, the source of a bloody battle discovered in its aftermath stage. Notes of agony, pain and suffering filled the air, substituting the occasional crackle supplied by nature, and the smoldering fires that surrounded. Who could have possibly done this!? In retrospect, Chinetsu should have known the answer should not be too complicated, given the reason they were there. Still, as a member of the medicinal corps, incredulousness in the face of such atrocity was a natural response. [break][break]
“No...I have no idea who they are.”[break][break]
“You are the first ally I’ve made contact with since my arrival here...”[break][break]
“...I have yet to rendezvous with the rest of my team...” [break][break]
His eyes burned holes across the smoldering battlefield as he attempted to seek answers. As he had spoken, he made sure to keep his voice to a minimum, barely audible to Anotsu, who stood right before him. The sheer temperature of the battlefield meant it was relatively fresh, and as such, trouble could still remain. Stealth was the favored approach, and before attempting to get any closer to analyze the scene and provide first aid, it was imperative they removed any notion this could potentially be a trap. Though he assumed Anotsu knew of this, he would once more let loose barely audible words, urging the Jounin to heed the warning and approach this situation with the utmost care. While he had tried to save his chakra during their movement, now, as they prepared a potential approach, Chinetsu began to fire up the energy within. [break][break]
“But nonetheless, I suggest we operate under the notion that whomever did this...” [break][break]
With Kikuyō amongst them and many others concentrated efforts to put out the medical tents were successful, which made it easier for Chinetsu’s people to evacuate patients and supplies.
[break] Despite the initial bleak nature of the fiery situation before them, it seemed quick thinking and a united, organized response allowed for those gathered nearby to minimize loss and casualty on many fronts. Chinetsu and his fellow medics were able to remove a bulk of the most useful medical agents they had at their disposal, as well as save most of their treated patients, moving both precious sets of cargo out of the inferno and towards the relative safety of the outside. That building looks unaffected by the flames...!!! And although he knew the warzone that was all around would bode no better for his medical staff’s survival, being out here and potentially be exposed to raids was currently a better prospect than simply dying in a burning building. Excited at the potential for safety granted by a relatively unscathed building found up ahead, Chinetsu knew it was best to keep his wits about him. After all, all it would take was one wrong move on their behalf for misfortune to fall upon them. [break][break]
With the medical supplies saved and patients out and about, one of the medics kicked open the door to an untarnished building across the town square and signaled for others to bring the patients in. They were well set up to treat things like burns now.
[break][break]
While he would not necessarily rest easy simply because they had literally gotten out of the fire, and perhaps there was most likely a rather hot culinary instrument awaiting nearby, he was a bit more confident the medical team could handle anything thrown at them, even with his absence. As much as I want to help treat, I need to back up our fighters on the field… Despite rejoicing in their salvation via relocation, he still held a bleak and miserable expression as his head and gaze steadily scanned the burning horizon all around. Many allies were spotted, but at the moment, none were known from his own village; he was in the middle of helping treat some injuries when the assault broke out, just before he could rendezvous with his people. Thus, whomever nearby was all he had to work with. In the end, it was better than nothing. [break][break]
Whether Chinetsu would rejoin the medics or stay out to help with the fight was ultimately up to him.
[break][break]
He had a tough decision ahead to make, but it did not take long to arrive at the most sensical conclusion. While his expertise and skill would undoubtedly be an asset in terms of helping the wounded, the fact they had escaped with a fair cache of supplies, as well as managed to transport the injured unscathed, meant they were in a better position than his initial calculations estimated. Was that…Anotsu-san...? And so, after also recognizing an ally nearby also fighting for dear life, Chinetsu decided it would be best to lend his hand in holy battle, and pray their medical team had the chops to keep the operation running while he was gone.[break][break]
From my pouch, I retrieved a multitude of senbon that fit betwixt the webbing of nimble digits. "Quickly - projectiles at the main target. Wide spread!" My words were calm, collected, yet stated with urgency. All of my strength was utilized as I sweeped my arms in wide motions, unleashing my senbon in tandem with the Raiton Ninjutsu conjured by the stealthy shinobi nearby. Those who could follow suit did just so, a wave of metal glint and barely audible whistle heralding a storm of various tools designed to pepper my quarry.
[break][break]
And so, after confirming it was indeed Anotsu, the Jounin befriended from earlier reconnaissance, Chinetsu’s choice was easy. After announcing his departure and establishing a command during his absence within the new hospital, the battle medic of Kumo found himself soon rushing towards his newly made acquaintance’s side, picking up rather quickly on his strategy. Just what IS that flying around...!? And while the aerial troll was hard to conceptualize visually, he who excelled a fine chakra control that allowed him to be a medic – and thus, a skilled ninjutsu user in general – would let chakra fly at his feet and hands. One would make his initial entry into the fighting scene swift, while the other helped power the aerial projectiles. As he waited for impact, he’d impart a few words Anotsu’s way.[break][break]
“Yo! Better late than never, I guess...?”[break][break]
“Well, regardless, I’m here now...let’s do this!!!”[break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Though it would seem the youngest of the three had suddenly lost himself in a sea of deep thought once Chinetsu placed the inquiry upon him regarding their plan, he would soon begin to come back to life, jerking forward with a simple proposal – to use the process of elimination. From the medic’s vantage point, he had known only one road, and with the ever-present darkness, it was almost impossible to make out anything else. So there are four... A small hum escaped his lips as he nodded to the youth’s plan. [break][break]
His chakra fueled hand, still maintaining the lighting gifted to him by his simple channeling of Raiton energy, would allow a better sight of the other routes as Chinetsu moved forward, passed the two and towards the apparent intersection of pathways that lie ahead. Well this makes things easier... As he surveyed the crossroads ahead, he could hear his fellow Kumo-nin and their newfound friend discuss the obvious plan ahead. Eventually, the conversation would steer towards the reason they were down here. Chinetsu had no intentions of revealing the true nature of his wandering. Simply put, the terms of his employ explicitly stipulated that he would be sober at all times. To be caught lost in the search of bootleg alcohol operations for the sake of consumption and profitability was not an option. [break][break]
“Truth be told, I too was on the search...” [break][break]
“...but it was less for a someone, and more for a something...” [break][break]
He spoke once the others were finished, and while he had not bothered to turn and face them once he decided to speak – he continued to survey the area, one hand alit, the other at his side as his gaze slowly and steadily scanned their surroundings, ever vigilant – he had nonetheless addressed their concerns with his own. That’s as vague as I can be… Regardless of their reasons for being down there, a united front to escape seemed like the best solution. He was, after all, present in the country for the sake of supporting the war effort. Were he to be questioned about this in the future, he could merely attribute this misadventure as an attempt at “morale building” with his fellow shinobi. [break][break]
“Regardless, I like your plan, so let’s stick together...” [break][break]
“…and why don’t you lead the way…?” [break][break]
He was of course referencing to the young boy, his tone deep, short, but respectful, and outstretched hand and pointed finger making it clear who Chinetsu was referring in order to remove all doubt. As the medic, his role was that of support. In this case, he was ready to see this through to end, with both of them – even after an odd set of noises that originated from the one path they had not yet traveled crashed through their conversation just as Chinetsu ended his words. Just what WAS that...!? One thing was for certain; time would soon tell. [break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]An unexpected chuckle escaped his lips like an emboldened prisoner freeing himself of his forced confines after being handed down a sentence of life, Kyuu’s quick-witted response drawing out a surprised and amused reaction from the Chuunin. And while Chinetsu’s visual attention had already drawn back to the menu, fingers carefully attached to the edge of the page, ready to turn it once his perusing was completed, he was still very much receptive to what his comrade had to say, as well as their newfound acquaintance. At least one of us can relax… As such, his periphery granted him a decent view of her added flair, an exaggerated response most likely attributed to the juvenile viewership that surrounded them. [break][break]
She seemed to take to the newcomer a bit more welcoming than the medic had, though it had less to do with some form of cold exterior that he was trying to employ, and more so with the fact the man was merely hungry and ready to eat. Oh man…I could eat one of each item…!!! His desire to satiate his hunger pans had trumped his normally friendly demeanor, though he was in luck, for ‘Kyuu had brought more than enough to represent the both of them. As per usual, she introduced herself in the bubbliest of ways. A few more chuckles on Chinetsu’s behalf followed. After a nod to the old man signaling he was ready to order, Chinetsu would quip back, all the while returning her gaze. [break][break]
“Well, yes...forgive me then...” [break][break]
“...I guess I didn’t realize just how hungry I was!” [break][break]
It was then that Chinetsu realized he could do away with any perceived rudeness on his part with a simple gesture. He was hungry, was he not? Well then, surely, he was not the only one that could possibly be afflicted by such an ailment. I was hoping for some peace and quiet...but I guess this will do... At the very least, he could invite his fellow cloud-nin, as well as their newfound friend, for a small snack. This was, after all, war time. Amassing a few allies never hurt, even if it meant you had to disrupt your own plans. On top of that, he had completed a few missions and tasks prior to leaving the village which, on top of his daily stipend, afforded to him for the mission, meant he had some money to spare. If he could not spend it on booze or "friendly company", then he figured sharing some amazing food was the next best thing available.[break][break]
“Say...would you two care to join me...?” [break][break]
“I've heard nothing but good things about this stall, not to mention the ramen here smells absolutely fabulous!” [break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]It was pure chaos. Flames reaching – no, exceeding – human dimensions began to deviously lick all manner of property around, regardless of whether it was organic or not. Those unable to defend from it would succumb in the most gruesome of ways, and those barely able to resist would be exposed not just to their life being threatened by such inferno, but also to witness those aforementioned demises in the most direct way possible. What a mess... In Chinetsu’s case, he found himself trapped inside a hell within a hell. His profession chained him to brick and mortar medical stations when possible, and in this case, he was well within one during the sudden attack. [break][break]
Wounded were being tended to prior to the assault, and now, with such intense conflagration everywhere taking place, the Kumo medic suspected more would soon follow. But with the hospital’s very existence being threatened by not only flames of hate, but also by the very ones the sowed them – Chinetsu surmised from a few peaks out the windows and towards the battlefield – he doubted their ability to continue treatment. At least we have reinforcements... And that they did – for now. Still, such knowledge would be reassuring, considering he could now more comfortably focus solely on healing, rather than worrying about keeping others alive, as well as himself. [break][break]
For the moment, a formidable number of assistants seemed to be abound. Unfettered by the flames, they had remained by their patient’s side, and although a bit flustered due to the sudden nature of the attack and fire, were nonetheless potentially very useful in this situation; all they lacked was some sensible leadership. Some of them should salvage supplies, while the others should focus on patient extraction... Chinetsu himself would most likely focus on two tasks – first, ensuring the supply runners focus mainly on the medicine at hand that was being used to treat their existing patients, as well as basic but essential remedies that will undoubtedly be needed for this battle, and secondly, that the patient escape route was safe, secure, and sensible. [break][break]
“LISTEN UP!” [break][break]
“We are going to designate a portion of you to focus on patient removal, while the rest will assist in retaining as many supplies as possible.” [break][break]
For once, Chinetsu was not cryptic with his approach. Rather than allowing his deep, uncaring baritone of a voice slowly fade away, lingering with doubt and leaving its listener to wonder the number of meanings carried behind such few spoken words, he would be blunt, loud, and direct. Simply put, this was a crisis. There was no room for error. We need to get out soon... Each move would not only have to be calculated, but also, deliberately, and with haste. The fire had risen, and with it, the nearby temperatures. Soon, all those around would find themselves residing in inhospitable areas. It was certainly no time to dawdle. [break][break]
“Focus only on what we need. Think of the tools and medicine we’re using, and those commonly needed on the field. And most importantly...” [break][break]
“...assume we won’t be able to come back.” [break][break]
Soon, it would be time to move; he only hoped everyone was ready. [break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Those ripe smells his fellow Cloud-nin referred to were most likely originating either from the rotting, dead bodies of those previously unfortunate enough to be mislead into this retched trap and then robbed soon after their tired, lost selves succumbed to lack of energy, or from an actual hooch operation hidden away somewhere nearby. And while the latter seemed unlikely – he was a bloodhound when it came to the illicit – Chinetsu cared not to find out whether the former was true or not. The sooner I’m out of here and above ground, the better… The Chuunin, sighing quietly, was beginning to feel the same as the reposeful mammal before him, and were it not for present company, would most likely indulge in a very similar commodious rest. [break][break]
“I agree...on both accounts...miss...?”

He found himself at a loss for words upon reaching the conclusion of his response to her previous inquiry as he soon realized that while he had learned the boy’s identity through her confident exclamation, she had yet to introduce herself. For some reason, I recognize her… She did, however, seem quite familiar, calm, and confident, and he was convinced he’d had a previous encounter with her of sorts. Then again, if this were the case, he would certainly remember that bear; perhaps something about her air screamed of some hidden camaraderie? Could it be his age betraying him already…? He’d scoff at the idea as quickly as it had come to him, and decided instead the gut feeling was fine left unchecked. She could introduce herself, or she could not; at this point, the medic’s only concern was escape. [break][break]
“Daichi-kun...what exactly is your plan...?”
[break]
Once asked, Chinetsu would peep the bear keeper eyeing a new path down the cave labyrinth. If the Rain-nin was unable to produce an authentic response to this directional crisis, then his next suggestion would be to simply head in that direction. [break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Chinetsu could tell he struck a nerve with the old man with his usage of the term roujin, though he had no actual ill intentions of defaming his senior, and instead simply wished to acquire his utmost undivided attention; he was a hungry, grown man with money to spend, after all. And so it seemed to work, the shopkeeper's anger momentarily fading away from his body like the wafting steam that came forth from the cooking pots behind him. Remaining silent, the medic then pointed at such instruments, the aromas they released being the main reason that he chose to sit at such a shop in the first place. But just as he was about to finally get what he wanted, a somewhat familiar tone broke through the silent trance both men held, ending the charades and thus undoing Chinetsu’s almost successful attempt at getting an order in. Now who might that be…? And while the somewhat friendly tone meant he was not hard pressed or bothered to turn right away, he certainly wasn’t aware of anyone that would refer to him with such familiarity, either. [break][break]
“…hmm…?” [break][break]
The thrum produced was dripped in genuine curiosity, and so, the medic clad in almost all white would turn and face the direction of that whom beckoned for him, his face slowly swiveling towards his left while he remained seated in place. Taking note that his newest customer had indeed seemed to recognize such familiarly spoken words, the old man behind the counter made a bitter face, shook his head, and turned back towards the rolling boil he had going within his biggest pot. It would seem that despite the stall owner’s troubled disposition over the dallying youth sprawled across the busy street, he knew to draw the line at displeasing any potential clientele. Yet still dripping in discontent, it seemed that the old man could still achieve some form of minor vengeance by making Chinetsu wait, even a little. Unfortunately for him, what little victory he had achieved was quickly erased, Chinetsu's focus now completely set on his visitor.[break][break]
“…oh, it’s you, ‘Kyuu-san!” [break][break]
A gentle smile came over him. And while he wasn’t exactly extremely familiar with his fellow equally ranked fellow cloud-nin, they were of the same platoon, creating a bond broken only by promotion, retirement, defection, or death. With a few weeks now elapsed into his forced military conscription, he had ample time not only to familiarize himself with the important figures that lead Kumo, but most also, with members of his platoon. That’s the Inuzuka girl… He was their healer, after all, so to make his life easy, he had made a point to introduce himself to all members of their squad on his first day back in service; he just didn’t expect to socialize with them on his own time. Then again, she wasn’t exactly a clueless child either, like some of the younger shinobi could be, and he technically was on a mission to aid Sound. Considering his earlier attempts at trying to link up with his fellow Cloud-nin, he found find this chance meeting to be potentially positive, and so, he would engage in it with his best disposition put forth. [break][break]
“No…I’m afraid not tonight. I’m just taking a break to eat – it’s back to the fields hunting Taiyou for me once I’m done…” [break][break]
“…and aren’t you a little old for that…?” [break][break]
His first answer was spoken matter-of-factly, while his follow up was a bit more on the playful side. She was, of course, free to do as she pleased, and it seemed her influence on the local youth was very much positive. During times like these, when war reigns supreme and all most commoners know is fear, a healthy distraction should always be welcome, especially for the children. To be young and carefree… Despite the conflicts rising all around, it seemed there was a bit of peace and happiness achieved, at least on this small patch of earth. And while Chinetsu had no intentions of propagating it via direct participation, he was no grump either; that role, after all, had been claimed by its rightful owner, the ramen maker across from him! [break][break]
Speaking of which…where’s my food!? Though he would await an answer from his fellow shinobi, Chinetsu was about to turn and remind the owner of the ramen stall he would like to be served. It was during this attempt that a new face would burst onto the scene. And while they did not quite share the same age, the newcomer was no child either. She was confident but polite in her approach, introducing herself while making light of the obvious. For the moment, Chinetsu would retreat towards silence, instead taking a good moment to scan the newest arrival in detail, trying to discern their intentions. Clad in very casual attire, it would not surprise him to learn she too was a shinobi; they were in the middle of a war, after all. When he had a moment to interject, he would do so, ever so softly. The extended hand would be met with a polite wave. [break][break]
“…hello Sayuri-san, I am Chinetsu…” [break][break]
“…what village to you hail from? And what are your orders…?” [break][break]
While he waited patiently for an answer, he finally got his hands on a physical menu. It would soon be time to make a choice. [break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Although not much more was spoken on regarding their respective histories, an air of intrigue and curious observation by the agent of Rain led Chinetsu to believe he was indeed enthralled and rapt with the topic; perhaps they could continue to discuss war stories at a further time? For now, the conversation shift would head back in the direction it initially was headed for. Without the rest of his fellow Cloud-nin to be found at the respective rendezvous points, moving alone would not be the best of ideas. A little backup never hurts… He was a medic, after all; if he were to proceed alone, who exactly would he be able to back up? [break][break]
“A Jounin, eh...?” [break][break]
“Well, consider me a Chuunin. Medic. At your service...” [break][break]
His intrigue in his higher rank was not rooted in disbelief or even jealousy, but rather in the notion he was relieved to be dealing with someone of high rank, rather than the youths he had been forced to train prior to leaving the village on this mission. And while it was part of the terms of his conscriptions, he hated every minute of it. I’m too old for this shit… So now, in the presence of someone more skilled, Chinetsu would be allowed to flourish, and if anything, go all out, knowing experience paired him. His tone, warmhearted and ardent, would hopefully accent his impressed nature. Needless to say, he was in agreement to the concept of a team-up.
“I agree...” [break][break]
“...and well said. It feels like we are in the eye of the storm…” [break][break]
While there was no conflict, and Chinetsu found himself lamenting in the lack of use for his position, his experienced side knew all too well hell was but around a nearby, river-lead, foliage covered corner. Being brash and overtly offensive was not always the best strategy for victory. It was the quiet ones that did the most damage, and when referring to the Taiyou, they are as ruthless as it gets – they would employ virtually any tactic in order to achieve victory. Having targeted the innocents before, it would be quite possible they were creeping through the shadows this very moment, careful eyes scanning the horizon so that they could size up their potential victims by threat level, and then attack accordingly. [break][break]
“...perhaps moving on together would be best...” [break][break]
[attr="class","zacwords"]Time’s progression, Chitnetsu guessed, appeared differently to the various denizens aboard the ship. For those happily married to either the bottle or their games, this moment of reprieve from all the hard work they are usually assigned may feel like its passing was measured with the blink of an eye. However, for the newly reformed – and sober – Chuunin, things would appear a bit more redundant, and thus, make this temporary stay sailing the seas feel like a permanent one. Alcohol, gambling, and music, huh…? Such temptations were no longer objects of his folly, a refocused mind instead now at the service of the Hidden Village in the Clouds. Simply put, he could no longer afford to lead such a life; he was a changed man, you see. [break][break]
But Chinetsu also knew that appearing brackish might also tempt some of the more observant participants in this voyage to question his intentions. After all, while the crews often changed for these jobs, there seemed to be a certain air about these men, a consistent theme in which they could easily identify one another from the largest of crowds, merely by body language. Where was this gig a few weeks ago, when I was still a drunk…? So, while he no longer indulged in such sin, he still knew all too well how to act like a man that lived for it. And while he wouldn’t go over the top, a bit of subtlety would go a long way. [break][break]
“Nice moves…” [break][break]
A lazy but truthful smile creeped across his face as he let his left hand temporarily rest a top the shoulder of a nearby random crewmember, whose body was enthralled in a most intricate set of gyrations and movements. And while they were far from blessed with rhythm, Chinetsu would tap along a bit as well, if anything, as a show of good faith; the men around him, drunk and smiling, were quick to acknowledge his arrival into their dance circle. Looks like Seiichi had the same idea… Out of the corner of his sharp eye, he would spot his captain. He was in an entirely different element the medic had never witnessed the man exist in before. It was fascinating. [break][break]
“ …” [break][break]
And while Chinetsu said nothing, he lent a small nod of approval his superior’s way. While it was best to blend in on their own, there was nothing out of the ordinary that the two men have their own exchanges as well. And so, after their brief stints with gavotting, bopping, and overall just strutting their stuff, it was time to move on to other activities. Poker, huh…? It seemed the man bear had lost a small bit of fortune over cards, and whether it was done on purpose or not would not matter; he now had yet another chance to blend in. Although, strictly speaking, he was hoping to stay away from the debauchery least he fall back on old, bad habits. [break][break]
“I was gonna hit up the nest…” [break][break]
“…but I suppose I could give it a try…” [break][break]
He pointed at the lookout in the sky as he spoke softly, emphasizing that he wished to be in a secure and observant position, to maximize their knowledge and control over the situation. However, Chinetsu noted it was not quite time for the current lookout to retire. Maybe I can get some of his money back, after all… And so, after letting his crewmember in charge of watch schedules know he’d like to try his hand sooner than later, he would seek out Seiichi’s cursed card game. The large man had decided to engage in what most men his size would do, a series of pugilistic physical exercises with his fellow burly brothers to pass the time. Chinetsu, on the other hand, would exercise a bit of his mind. He wasn’t the best at poker, but he was able to count cards. [break][break]
