The Kattarui themselves are a clan, however most of the workings and organization happen only through the ones that show an aptitude for the Kekkei Genkai. It’s like there are two families inside the Kattarui, one that is known by the public and the other kept secret. Formally spoken of as the Kattarui Coven, making members “witches” (or majo) regardless of gender, they have the collective goal of trying to further their clan’s Hijutsu and Kekkei Genkai as far as possible. In fact, the Hijutsu actually came into being after the first signs of the Kekkei Genkai, though in the books the Coven has changed it to be that the Hijutsu came first.
With the clan being scattered across the world, it has become tougher for the coven to act as one, thus it has shattered into different groups each with its own general objective. Since the rise of the empire, the only thing that has seemed to stay consistent between the Covens is their identity and culture.
Lower-level members are given an alias with the word Majo, typically reserved for children or young adults. Those who master the Kekkei Genkai are given an alias with the word Kijo, normally for the elderly. Following these titles is a word that generally describes the person and is typically given to them as children and sticks with them for their entire life.
Yume Nai Osore/Dream Without Fear (Genjutsu)
Requirements: A unique type of genjutsu that works through touch, a medium unorthodox to genjutsu and thus incredibly difficult to grasp for most. The way it functions is that as a Yumenka comes in contact with a person, they slowly start falling asleep without immediately realizing why. As this person starts to gradually lull, they start losing access to their sense of touch, though more specifically pain. Pain stops registering outside of fatal wounds at higher proficiencies. To break out of this genjutsu, the person has to become aware of their sluggish movements and reactions or take notice of their lack of pain. The method of breaking out is still the same as any other genjutsu, snapping the person awake immediately. Once awoken from the effects, Yume Nai Osore cannot affect that person again.
At lower levels, the amount of fatigue-induced is less than enough to even induce a yawn. As one increases in proficiency, they reduce how many hits are required to activate the genjutsu and how subtle it is.
Requires Journeyman Genjutsu and Rookie Taijutsu. Caps at Veteran unless one has the Kattarui Heritage, which then it caps at Master.
Yumeka
Requirements: The Kattarui do not sleep, rather they enter a trance-like state known as Yumeka. In Yumeka, the Kattarui begin to move and react on pure instinct, executing the will of the subconscious. The way one can increase their mastery in this curse is by being able to focus on their objectives, whether awake or asleep. It requires a lot of time, concentration, and willpower to try and override the body's subconscious desires with that of the conscious. Now, you may be wondering what the upside to this is? Well, since the mind is basically shut off, genjutsu is generally ineffective. Having their eyes closed and their sight being virtually unused, the only genjutsu that becomes viable against them is auditory and olfactory.
At Rookie, this is essentially sleepwalking. There’s no rhyme or reason to the actions taken while asleep. Staying asleep is difficult and the lightest sounds can wake you.
At Apprentice, it’s hard to purposely direct one’s sleeping self but if they are able, the Kattarui in question can carry out simple commands. It’s like advanced sleep walking at this stage but nothing crazy yet. One has to be kicked out of their slumber to be woken up at this point
At Journeyman, directing the sleeping body is no longer a problem, however, it still moves sluggishly and slowly due to the fact that the person is still asleep. Using other proficiencies in Yumeka becomes available at this stage, up to a Rookie level. (ex: Having Raiton at Veteran means you can only use it up to the Rookie proficiency level while in Yumenka.) Physical enhancements are not applied.
At Veteran, it becomes hard to distinguish whether the Kattarui is asleep or not as their body starts to move as it normally would when awake. While not being able to do things that heavily task the body such as running at top speeds, whilst in Yumenka their reflexes and strength are at whatever level they would normally be. Physical enhancements are applied while in Yumenka. Other proficiencies are available up to Apprentice.
At Master, a Kattarui finds that they work better while in Yumeka rather than when they are awake. They essentially become immune to outside distractions and are able to hyperfocus on what they want to do. Also, tasks can now be given in real-time, essentially allowing full control over the sleeping body and being able to react to things as they happen, which is unavailable prior to this point. Other proficiencies are available up to Journeyman.
At Grandmaster, sleep becomes as easy as breathing to you and you can function as if totally awake. Not only that, you become aware, remembering your senses from sleep when you wake up. Waking up only happens when you desire it to, plus the added bonus of never having to fall asleep if you do not want to. Other proficiencies are available up to Master.
