Sumire is an enigma and whether that is by design or happenstance is one of the many mysteries that is hidden up her sleeve.
Perhaps it is not fair to start there. Let us start with her beginnings in the Hidden Sand Village, where she was born and raised by a loving young couple. This pair loved their daughter and raised her the best they could as sushi restaranteurs... a fact that caused Sumire endless hours of ridicule from her classmates. No, not because it's dumb to have a sushi restaurant in the middle of the desert... though that would be the better reason. Actually, it was because of what happened before they came into their current lifestyle. Normally that wouldn't be a matter of disdain, but it was a widely known fact that her parents were failures from the shinobi school. It made no sense to the girl. Her dad was the one that helped teach her taijutsu and her mom similarly had guided her hand in the art of Kyujutsu. Yet still, they were failures as shinobi and as such Sumire was expected to be as well.
Against those odds though Sumire had excelled in all things when it came to the academy training. A novel concept, surely. As she grew older, her parents were only that much prouder of their daughter for her achievements and in some ways attempted to live vicariously through Sumire's sucess. She didn't hold it against them, but no matter how many times she tried to question her parents regarding their failure in becoming shinobi themselves, they'd keep a tight lip and change the subject. Truly irksome.
Anyway... as Sumire grew up, she became known for her charm, cunning, and confidence. No matter what was thrown her way, she always approached all obstacles with a very bithe attitude. Maybe it was because due to her heritage she had nothing to lose. On the other hand, there were others around her that had nothing but privledge in their veins. Some odd strength that came from just being born that others lacked. As annoying as it was, it was true. Those with Kekkei Genkai could do things that others couldn't simply because it was in their blood. With that alone they could surpass their peers that had to work hard and study well for even a fraction of the power. Unfair, no?
Well it was, because while she was known as the one with failure parents; others were known to come from distinguished households or have powers that need nurturing like no other. How special... snowflakes as Sumire liked to call them. There was only one other person that could sympathize with this line of thought... but we'll get to him later. Right now, the important part is that Kekkei Genkai users didn't deserve their blessings. In fact, some even saw it as a curse when there were those around them like Sumire that could only wonder why she couldn't do what they did.
Moving on. Fastforward a bit and Sumire was placed on a team of 3. Yohei is the only one that needs to be mentioned of that team of 3 though. We mentioned him earlier, remember? The one that was friends with Sumire because of their similar background? Well yeah, that's his name. The other one doesn't matter because they died. Something along the lines of fighting together during the attack on the hidden sand village, yada yada, and then deciding... why should she help that monster in their final moments? So, she simply didn't. Yohei didn't either, by the way. Didn't matter all that much considering that the Hidden Sands lost and was taken over in the end.
Oh, right, this is the part where Sumire became a nukenin. See, she actually doesn't care much for the whole obeying authority thing, so she simply didn't and dipped. Her parents weren't in much trouble since they were civilians and honestly there was no reason to stay. But what was she going to do now? Eh well, Yohei seemed to have a plan so why not? Maybe on the way, she could return some... balance to the world. Ha.
Speaking of balance, that has nothing to do with why she wears shrine priestess clothes. It was something Yohei told her to wear. Disguise or something to not be found out as ninja... but Sumire is quite convinced that it's because of Jashin or whatever. She didn't care either way and wears it around.
Taijutsu [Apprentice]
She doesn't like getting all sweaty and having her hands dirtied, but she's pretty decent at hand to hand combat.
Kyujutsu [Apprentice]
Archery normally isn't a well recognized shinobi skill, but it fits Sumire's style. She can shoot birds out of the sky, much less any moving target at a decently distant range. That said, she usually has to stay in one place to do so.
Stealth [Apprentice]
What ninja wouldn't be at least decent at stealth... or at least the basics. Muting the sound of one's footsteps and hiding in one's surroundings as much as reasonably possible. Sumire does have a knack for knowing when she's being watched. Call it women's intuition.
Raiton [Journeyman]
Did you know that Raiton is known as the most chaotic element? Thats what they said in the guidebooks... but anyway, that's Sumire's nature affinity. Having practiced the art for several years, she has learned to properly manipulate her chakra to infuse electricity into her weapons. In addition, aside from the basics of electrical current generation, she can call upon lightning bolts to strike within her immediate area with some focus and mild delay.
Medical Ninjutsu [Apprentice]
Well, if you're going to be roaming around in the wild, then should know some level of medical ninjutsu. Again, some basics. She can use her chakra to sterilize wounds and even heal small cuts or minor injuries. She's also plays around with poisons that can mildly debilitate foes temporarily (such as blindness or numbness), but nothing deadly.
