In a world where many can swear by tragic childhoods, Ai - once 'Naomi Fon' - is perhaps a particularly harrowing case. The daughter of rural Lightning Country farmers, Ai was undoubtedly destined for a simple life until a group of rabid bandits ransacked the settlement in which she lived, murdering her parents, burning down her home and taking her captive with the intent to sell her into slavery. She was six.
Not long after, in a fit of sadistic impatience, one of her captors gouged out both of her eyes, an event she barely survived. After this, her potential value obviously dropped precipitously, and it was very likely she would have been killed if an old sage had not taken pity on her and purchased her regardless.
Under his tutelage, Naomi spent nearly eleven years not only training her senses so she could 'see' again, but also in deep meditation. Despite her tremendously traumatic past, Naomi took up the name 'Ai' - meaning 'Love' - and quietly resolved that she would be an instrument of goodness, no matter the injustice of the world.
Having spent much time in seclusion, Ai is a notoriously poor communicator, often speaking with poetic flourish. She is introverted in the extreme and tends not to spend very much time in the company of others, especially those who do not understand the value of silence. She is an incredibly kind and magnanimous person, almost to a fault, though she is by no means a pacifist and will even kill others if needst be. Despite her fragile appearance and gentle manner, Ai is, if not proud, at least resolutely independent. The swordswoman rarely experiences attraction to others and is easily embarrassed by indecent things.

As part of her training in responding to the world around her and also in the interest of defending herself, Ai has learned to swing a sword around. Most of her training has been focused on the assumption of a defensive stance and in parrying oncoming attacks. Though her ability to retaliate over distance is virtually nonexistent, Ai is able to sustain short flurries of blows with relative ease, and will usually be able to deflect the flight of a lone projectile if it is not too swift.
Hearing Enhancement
After losing both of her eyes, Ai spent many long years honing her sense of hearing to compensate, and is able to build accurate maps of the space around her in her mind based on auditory feedback, as well as respond dynamically to nearby noise.
Maomimi (魔王耳 - DEVIL'S EARS)
A specialized tree of ninjutsu for the sensorily impaired, Devil's Ears gained its name from an old superstition of cripples consorting with demons to regain their senses. A single one-handed-seal is used to, in Ai's case, flood both the ears and the soles of her feet with chakra, not only enhancing the capabilities of her ears but also attuning them to the vibration she feels through the air and the ground. The technique is such that visual stimuli would ordinarily greatly interfere with its effects, but this is not an issue for Ai.
The result of this jutsu is twofold: first, that Ai is capable of compartmentalizing myriad different noises simultaneously, raise or lower different stimuli's comparative volume and infer the precise mechanics of even highly complex movements in the area around her, with the effect diminishing over longer distances. The attunement of her ears also allows her to track the path of even airborne objects as they approach her, though they cannot be 'seen' quite as totally.
For maximum effect for vibration-based stimuli Ai must remain flat-flooted and not be in a space where vibrations are dampened e.g standing on sand or immersed in water, though in dire circumstances and its own seal a thin film of chakra can be used to envelop the body for a severely diminished version of the overall effect.
