A nice little settlement rested in the nook of two hills overlooking the coast, with little fields of grain growing tall and dancing in a warm breeze that turned a lazy windmill watching over the hovels. The sky was cloudless, and the smell of sea salt made for a pleasant journey for a certain carrottop traveler wearing a simple earthy green with worn boots. On his back a leather pack jingled with the sounds of bits and bobbles he had collected from trading with the people there.
Kakesu’s feet were taking him to the beach. He thought that maybe he might be able to get some cool shells to peddle to folks living far from the ocean for a profit. That was the excuse anyways. As soon as he got to the water though it was a different story. Boots flung off and everything, but trousers discarded on the seemingly empty beach.
He ran for the break of water with a silly grin on his face, for fun he pushed chakra into his feet and began walking across the water for several paces. When he felt himself beginning to stumble with his chakra he jumped up and belly flopped into an incoming wave. Submerged for a moment he was pushed back up by the currents. A little under shoulder deep, he pushed his wet orange hair from his forehead to look around.
The teen scooped up a handful of soggy sand and tossed it on a growing mound beside her. Kaede sat cross legged on the beach staring out at the waves as they washed up and drew back in perfect natural rhythm. She straightened out her right leg and dug her toes into the sand playfully. There really wasn’t anything like this back home and she breathed deep the salty breeze that rustled the rich honey coils piled up in a messy bun that crowned her queen of the day. There was nothing that could shake her mood today. Not even the mess she hoped would be a sand castle at some point. [break][break]
She stood up and brushed her hands together, sand falling like chalk dust brought up memories of the academy and the friends she’d made there. A small grin tugged at the corner of her lips and she mosied over to the water to rinse off. Kaede splashed into the water, kicking the waves absentmindedly until the water rose above her knees. She didn’t want to have to wait for her shorts to dry so she bent down and washed her hands. As she straightened up she caught sight of a stranger swimming further out. He looked about her age so she smiled and waved in a friendly manner.

Kakesu had turned his attention towards the waves, pushing chakra into his feet to push himself up towards the surface. He’d start riding the wave, his legs shaking as he wobbled trying to keep his footing which was much harder than it was on flat water. A wave in his peripheral vision broke his concentration and the young traveler wiped out, splashing forward for, and disappearing for a moment beneath the surface of the waves.
He emerged a few moments later, spitting a bit of salt water from his mouth with an exaggerated noise. He took in a deep breath and wiped his eyes, scanning for the figure that had beckoned to him with a hand cuffed to keep the sun from blinding him. His eyes fell on the fair-haired girl in the distance and he finally smiled and waved back to her before another wave battered him forward again.
He crawled out of the water and approached. Bare chested with his trousers rolled up over his knees and waterlogged. He was thinner and less muscular than shinobi were. A civillian through and through.
“Oh hi, I didn’t see you there,” Kakesu said as he got closer, goosebumps raising as the breath of the sea met his wetted skin. “I hope I didn’t bother you, it’s okay if I use the beach here?”

Kaede watched the stranger trying to stand on the waves and was thoroughly impressed. He wasn’t anyone she recognized even though he seemed about her age. She smiled as he made his way, buffeted by the waves, towards her but was surprised by the question. She didn’t really have any authority over the use of the beach, it was public access, so she figured he must not be from around here. [break][break]
“Everyone’s welcome… unless you’re up to no good.” She chuckled good naturedly at the thought. Then she looked him up and down. He didn’t seem like a ninja but looks could be deceiving. “What were you doing out there? It seemed pretty cool.” [break][break]
The genin had come to the beach with the intention of training suiton. She knew that one of her chakra natures was water but so far she’d been nervous to try it on account of her insects. She was worried they might drown if she were to be completely submerged. [break][break]

“I was jus’ practicing some new magic thing I learned,” Kakesu said, grinning ear to ear at the compliment. “Don’t worry, I ain’t up to any nonsense.”
He breathed a sigh of relief that she didn’t seem to be some sort of authority. People always seemed to have their own ideas about travelers like himself and what they could and couldn’t get up to. A seagull landed not far from where they were standing, looking at them awkwardly in hopes that they were the type of people that might feed it a little snack.
“I like your hair!” he commented, grabbing his own hair and scrunching at it the way he wasn’t brave enough to try to do to the strangers. “You wanna see more water spells- uhh what was your name?” he asked. “I’m Kakesu the lesser.”
“Thanks!” Kaede blushed, twisting a finger around a curl. She wasn’t accustomed to getting compliments from boys. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kakesu.”[break][break]
She looked back out over the water behind him. Magic? She thought to herself. That was one way to think about it. “Are you talking about ninjutsu techniques? I’d love to see more of that.” [break][break]
Kaede knew she had the capability of utilizing water release as well but she’d always been hesitant to give it a try. She never liked the feeling of being submerged in water. It made her insects squirm nervously whenever she took so much as a bath so she always took a shower instead. Watching someone else practice seemed safe enough though.[break][break]

“Nin-joo-sue?” Kakesu said with a look of confusion. “Nope, I don’t know any ninja stuff, miss!” he said. He didn’t really understand that what he was doing was ninjutsu, if it wasn’t apparent.
He began making a few hand seals and some of the soil beneath the sand started to rise up in front of him to shape the sand into a little tower like one that might be made from a bucket. Afterwards he did a few more hand seals with the tides to pull a bit of the water to fill in a little “moat” around it.
“Per-tty cool huh?” he said. “I figured out how to do two kinds of magic, I bet you could do one too if you tried,” he said.
A harsher waver rolled in and washed his little tower down, the sand around its base collapsing in on itself.
“Dang it,” the boy said.
