An image of a chibi, glasses-wearing, version of Tsukiya popped in his head as he struggled to comprehend his situation. The figure bowed politely as it stood inside a classroom not unlike the ones in shinobi academies. There was a television beside the chibi that sat atop a metallic cart. It showed the scene that the young Hyūga currently found himself in. A wide angled shot that seemed to take account of all of the teen Hyūga's surroundings in the visceral detail that only dōjutsu could provide.

Behind the diminutive Hyūga, there were 3 things written on the chalkboard. The caricature pointed to each point using a wooden stick. One: he we was being held at knife-point by his distant cousin. Two: was the number of beast-clone pairs that were about to jump him and his clansmen-turned-captor. Three: Tsukiya was almost out of chakra.

The young Hyūga's Byakugan suddenly deactivated, the veins on the side of his eyes fading as it did. He blinked rapidly as his vision slowly returned to the usual 120° field of vision humans had. It was as if time slowed down as he focused in on his attackers coming in to pummel him to the ground. The chibi Tsukiya in his brain nodded, as if confirming the real Tsukiya's assessment of the situation. An assessment that could be summarized so elegantly using one word.

Tsukiya watched his old friend with a look of confusion. She had definitely changed from the Kyoufu Senju he knew. In their youths, she always made the plans and Tsukiya just followed. Whatever misadventure they had gotten into was entirely on Kyoufu's shoulders. Now that the tables were turned, Tsukiya couldn't help but feel that it was karma smiling at him for being such a lazy dog when he was younger.

"What do people our age do anyway?"

For fun, she meant? Tsukiya wasn't sure how to answer that without coming off as a complete asshole.

"Uhhhh. . ." he began, a slight tinge of red on his cheeks, "lots of things? What I mean to say is uh. . ."

The Hyūga's confusion was doubled. He supposed he had never been asked that specific question before. Besides, whatever it was he—or anyone he closely associated with him—wanted to do, they just kinda did it. Shinobi had that kind of luxury. Old enough to kill, old enough to drink.

Shaking his head, he slamed a fist into an open palm, trying to forcefully push out the confusion in his mind.

Truth be told, he wasn't fond of doing D-Rank missions at all. They didn't pay as much as his other job did, nor did he feel like he benefited from them as much as taijutsu or ninjutsu training.

Tsukiya could feel a numbing sensation from deep within his biceps. He knew nothing was broken, the young Hyūga's eyes would have told him so immediately. That, however, didn't stop the pangs of pain coming from his palms and wrists.

There was a tugging sensation on the back of his jacket. He immediately recognized the the visage of Makoto. While he was less disoriented than what the jounin would think—the Byakugan was good at seeing through such menial distractions—he wasn't exactly at his most capable at the moment. He tried to pry the Inazuka away from him to no avail. His limbs wouldn't move the way he needed them to at the moment.

So it was then, after a few spins, that the Hyūga boy found himself mid-air, flying towards his clansmen like nothing more than a rag doll.

Tsukiya laughed. Every word she spoke seemed to resonate with his own story. He shrugged his shoulders, smile still plastered on his face.

"It makes perfect sense to me," he began with a distant look in his eyes, "While I can only speak for my family, I know of a few other Hyūga in my village whose experiences don't vary too differently from mine."

The young Hyūga paused to think of how to properly elaborate his thoughts. This was a conversation, Tsukiya decided, that required some sort of calming of drink. With a contemplative look on his face, Tsukiya held his plam in front his chest, silently asking his distant cousin to wait. He turned to his side, slightly away from Aiko to call the attention of a server. The Hyūga asked them if they would kindly serve the pair some tea while the lady thought about what to order.

"Haha ue was from the Main Family," he continued, going back to his more relaxed demeanor, "I don't really know much about my ojiisan or my obāsan. From what I gathered, they were council members back in Konohagakure? No one of any real splendor. Haha ue prided herself in bein—"

He turned to address the sudden interruption. Oh, the tea had finally arrived. "Thanks!"

"Where was I?" he asked himself, head turning slightly to the side, eyes unfocused. Jogging his memory, Tsukiya kept his hands busy with the cup of matcha. He held it in his right hand, while he placed the base on the palm of his left. As Tsukiya rotated the cup clock-wise three times, one couldn't help wonder if a traditionalist like Aiko would find humor in Tsukiya's contrasting behavior. "Ah, right. Yes, well, to answer your question, haha ue clung to Hyūga tradition like ink on sealing scrolls. I trust you know what that's like?"

Despite the levity in his tone, Tsukiya gave her a look that conveyed a deeper understanding of what it was like to truly be part of the Hyūga clan.

"I studied the jūken as soon as I could walk. She constantly pushed me, you know? Broke my body and spirit so my Byakugan would open before I even stepped foot in the academy. I remember her constantly saying that a Hyūga was 'insert adjective here', and a Hyūga should always 'insert verb here with a smattering of thinly veiled references to Hi no Kuni'. . ."

Chuckling to himself, he took a sip of his tea. Slurping just the right amount to convey his appreciation for the drink.

"I fucking hate it." he finished, the tone of the conversation suddenly dropping in temperature.

Tsukiya quirked a brow upwards. She had caught that huh? He was impressed, the look in his eyes made no secret about it. He found that as a shinobi, it was best to keep a low profile. Referring to people by their name often during the beginning of an acquaintanceship lead to better memory association. The connection between person and name would form, and information would then travel from their short-term memory to their long-term memory at a faster and much smoother rate. In this business, Tsukiya made it a point to be forgotten. A shinobi that operated in the shadows was far more dangerous than a shinobi that operated publicly after all.

"Tsukiya Hyūga at your service Aiko-san," he said as he straightened himself out. The hand he had leaned on pointed to the unfinished meal he had pushed aside. "And I don't recommend the rabbit. . ." he advised, in a near whisper.

He observed the curiosity in his distant cousin's eyes. She had questions, that much he could tell. Questions that she refused to voice for some reason or the other. Why would a stranger engage with another stranger if it wasn't for curiosity in the first place? The Hyūga male saw no reason for the other to hold back.

"You assume correctly," he continued, "but I'm here to serve as back-up for my platoon more than anything else, really. I don't really care for Hokage at all, or this village. Haha ue would have my tongue for that. She despises Otogakure and everything in it. She'd prefer it if I died trying to burn this whole village down."

He sighed at the thought of his hateful mother. Some people just needed to learn how to let things go.

"I can tell that you're curious, you know?" prodded the teen, "just ask away, Aiko-san. It might be the last time you and I get to interact in such a friendly manner."

"Ah, but I should be thanking you," he corrected as he took his seat, "You have saved this Hyūga from dying of boredom. The pleasure is all mine."

He looked at his plate as he sunk into his chair. He lost his appetite instantly. What the hell was taking Fei-zǒng so long anyway? Twenty minutes tops, he had said. It had been two hours. Regardless, this was a pretty welcome reprieve for the male Hyūga, even if he was interacting with a foreign shinobi.

"I can't say I've met anyone from Amegakure either," he continued, "this is quite the serendipitous encounter, don't you think Aiko-san?"

Tsukiya smiled softly as he relaxed deeper into his seat. His shoulders slumped as he rested his head on his right hand. His gaze didn't waver at the attention she was giving him. His eyes were almost squinting, as if somebody had told him a joke he was dying to tell somebody else but couldn't. Their stances couldn't be more different, yet conveyed the same exact thing.

"Picking them off dead bodies?" drawled the Hyūga, "Real classy Gauma-san."

Like Tsukiya was one to talk. He would absolutely pocket those weapons. Kunai and shuriken were getting expensive these days! More and more people entered the shinobi force every day, and inflation as only getting higher. There was only so much ryō in the world after all. Plus, shinobi always kept their weapons in prime condition. It was a win-win for everybody. Tsukiya won by keeping his expenditures low, and the dead won by going on a new adventure to the Pure Lands. A lot of their loved ones were there anyway! But most importantly, the kunai won. There was no greater honor to a kunai than being used to waste a shinobi.

Tsukiya yawned. A long boat ride followed by a long trek. Yippie! Things just felt a little too boring for such a high-ranking mission. He wouldn't voice that out to his squad though. Morale was quite important in long missions like this.

Tsukiya blinked twice. Recognition flashed quickly in his eyes. She was one of those Hyūgas wasn't she? He could tell by the way she stood and spoke. She was trained--probably beaten until she learned to walk and talk the way she did; the way they did. He knew exactly what that kind of life was about. He hated it. The teen couldn't even shake some of the habits his mother had instilled in him, which included the way he spoke.

A wise sage once wrote that the eyes were the windows to one's soul. Tsukiya didn't really believe in spiritual bullshit like that. To Tsukiya, The Rikudō Sennin was just something shinobi mothers told their children to explain how chakra worked. It wasn't like 2 year olds could understand the meta-physical concepts of space-time jutsu. The answer to how it was all possible was "The Rikudō Sennin". His mother had explained once to him that the Hyūga descended from the moon. There bloodline was directly blessed by the Sage of the Six Paths. That's why their eyes looked the way they did. Tsukiya’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t even hear what she had said after she spoke his name. He gaped at the Senju with a dumbfounded look on his face.

“K…Kyo-chan?!”

Back when the Hyūga boy was a child, Kyoufu Senju was one his best friends. He had met her even before they were students in the academy. Many of the loyal Konoha refugees kept in touch with their old countrymen and it wasn’t uncommon that they set little playdates for their kids when they weren’t training. A shinobi had to be good with social interaction after all. It was easier to blend in that way.

He was a lazy kid who didn’t really put much effort into being a better shinobi. The only time he really showed any promise was whenever he was training with his mother. The fear of an even heavier beatdown kept his laziness in check better than any reward ever could.

Kyoufu was different though. She was almost his exact opposite in a way. The Senju dove headfirst into anything. Asking questions was but an afterthought for her. She was brave, and didn’t hesitate in her training. Tsukiya, later in his career as a genin, would note that a lot of his current personality was reflective off the people that played a significant influence in his life growing up. Yunyao-taichou and Kyo-chan being on the forefront of that list.

I must look like an idiot to her right now, he thought to himself. No, he definitely did. He shook his head to compose himself. So much for a stupid fetch quest.

It was just like Fei-zǒng to pull their resident Hyūga out of training for a damn fetch quest. He felt like he was on the verge of the next level. His taijutsu felt sharper, and he could swear that he was on the verge of really understanding what Raiton was all about.

Yet here he was, running an errand he felt his chūnin-senpai was more than capable of doing. Okay, perhaps that wasn't a fair assessment of his situation. Tsukiya begrudgingly understood that this a little more important than the usual errand. It was heavily suggested that he show their new platoon member around. It was the right thing to do as her senpai, they had said. There were some light references to the word "pay cut" thrown around in the last conversation he had with his betters, which, of course, had Tsukiya sweating.

"I got the memo, damn it!" the Hyūga grumbled as he made his way to the designated meeting place.

Kiri was bustling in the afternoon. Tsukiya didn't tire of the sounds of his Hidden Village. The light footsteps of shinobi, the conversations that the fishermen had with each other, the pirates who cussed at each other while they huddled in alleys playing dice, Tsukiya enjoyed it all. It was a welcome reprieve from the missions he often undertook with his team.

It didn't take him long to arrive at his destination. The walk helped improve the young Hyūga's sour mood. He supposed it would be nice to meet his new genin teammate. His eyes met Kyoufu's green eyes. A faint memory plucked quietly deep in his mind. Blink, blink.
